Ashmore roofs, ready for the next big storm

Ashmore is classic Gold Coast family-home country: street after street of 1970s and 80s brick-and-tile houses, established trees, and a lot of long-term owners. It sits inland, so salt isn’t the main enemy here. Wind, storms and leaf litter are.

When ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred came through in March 2025, its winds uprooted trees in Ashmore, and roofs and gutters copped the debris. Storm season comes round every year, and the roofs that cope best are the ones with solid ridge caps, sound tiles and clear valleys.

What I look for on Ashmore roofs

• Original concrete tiles around 40 years old, with the surface coating long gone and the tiles soaking up water.
• Ridge caps on the original mortar bedding, now cracked or loose and ready to lift in the next big blow.
• Valleys and gutters packed with leaves from established trees, which overflow in heavy rain and back water up under the tiles.
• Cracked or slipped tiles from falling branches and storm debris.

What I do about it

For an inland Ashmore roof, the focus is storm-readiness: broken tiles replaced, ridge caps rebedded and repointed, valleys and gutters cleared and resealed, then a recoat in a colour that suits the house. I’ll point out any overhanging branches worth trimming before the next storm, too.
